Studio · who reads the weather

Small studio, big weather

Seventeen forecasters, editors, producers and number people in a converted print shop in Shoreditch. We read the feed all day so you do not have to.

[01]The story so far

It started with a weather report

In 2019 Maya Okafor was buying ads for big brands and noticing something odd. The ads that worked best were never the expensive ones. They were the ones that felt like they had read the room.

So she started writing forecasts. One page, every week, about what people online were about to care about. Clients read them, then asked her to make the things she was predicting. Updraft grew out of that kitchen table habit: forecast first, then make, then read what happened.

Today we are seventeen people in London with a small outpost in Lisbon, working with pickle bars, earbud makers, potters and run clubs. The habit has not changed. We still write the forecast before anyone touches a camera.

“The algorithm is just a very large crowd. Talk to one person in it and the rest start listening.”

[02]What we stand for

Four words on the studio wall

They are painted above the coffee machine. Hover one to see what it means on a Tuesday.

  • 01

    Bold

One idea people remember beats ten they scroll straight past.

  • 02

    Fast

The feed moves in hours. We keep up without cutting the corners that matter.

  • 03

    Honest

We report the flops as loudly as the wins. That is how the next one lands.

  • 04

    Curious

We ask why things work, then test what might work next. Mostly on Fridays.
